Power and Conflict Part 1

This class covers the first five AQA Power & Conflict anthology poems. The classes guide students in their annotation, analysis skills, helping them examine the poems’ context, themes and devices. Students will gain a clear grasp of pace, tone, structure & language devices, and comparison skills.

Session 1 – Ozymandias
Ozymandias, by Percy Bysshe Shelley. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 2 – London
London, by William Blake. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 3 – Extract from the Prelude
Extract from the Prelude, by William Wordsworth. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 4 – My Last Duchess
My Last Duchess, by Robert Browning. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 5 –– Charge of The Light Brigade
Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson. After reading the poem aloud, we will cover relevant contextual points for consideration and important poetic techniques. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.
