This class offers key context for Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. The class covers the rich context of the Victorian world, Dickens’ own life, his intentions for writing the novella, and the importance of his 1843 preface. It covers such topics as Victorian London, Industrial Revolution, child labour, the Poor Laws, workhouses, public health, and Christianity.
