Power and Conflict Part 2

This class covers five more AQA Power & Conflict anthology poems. The classes guide students in their annotation, analysis skills, helping them examine the poems’ context, themes and devices. Students will gain a clear grasp of pace, tone, structure & language devices, and comparison skills.

Session 1 – Exposure
Exposure, by Wilfred Owen. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 2 – Storm on the Island
Storm on the Island, by Seamus Heaney. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 3 – Bayonet Charge
Bayonet Charge by Ted Hughes. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 4 – Remains
Remains by Simon Armitage. We will read the poem aloud, then focus on annotating the poem effectively, before covering relevant contextual points for consideration. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.

Session 5 –– Poppies
Poppies by Jane Weir. After reading the poem aloud, we will cover relevant contextual points for consideration and important poetic techniques. We will then consider ways to compare key quotes with other poems in the anthology.
