Creative Writing: Descriptions

Service Description

This short course builds students’ understanding of effective description writing in their English Language Paper 1 exam. The sessions provide guidance on generating and organising ideas from four exam style questions. Students will watch Hollyann experiment with producing different devices and practice applying those in their own responses. Session 1 Using a sample exam style question, the first session focuses on applying language techniques, such as the senses, different examples of figurative language, and attention-grabbing word selections. We will also touch upon the need to structure responses to build a believable image in the readers’ minds. Session 2 Secondly, we will pay attention to effective planning to ensure that a clear structure is produced in the work. Each student will produce their own plans in response to another exam style question before having the opportunity to share their ideas about what makes a good plan. Session 3 Focus: writing from a plan. Initially, we will plan from a new question as a group. Then the group will watch Hollyann produce a written paragraph from an item on that plan. Finally, students will practice writing their own paragraphs (from either the group plan or their own) and will have the opportunity to share their work for constructive feedback. Session 4 This final session gives students the opportunity to produce a timed response to another unseen sample question. Students will plan individually and then write their responses under timed conditions. Then constructive feedback on the work produced will be given.
