Service Description

This short course builds students’ understanding of effective story writing in their English Language Paper 1 exam. The sessions provide guidance on generating and organising ideas from four exam style questions. Students learn the significance of plot, setting, characters and key language devices needed to produce engaging writing. Session 1 Our first session encourages students to differentiate stories from descriptions and to familiarise themselves with the look of the sample exam style question. We will cover the key aspects needed in story writing to produce believable, engaging writing: plot, setting and character. Session 2 The second session helps students consider effective planning to ensure a clam and controlled writing experience. After looking at three example plans as a group, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each, students will practice writing their own plans in response to another exam style question. Session 3 Using a third sample question, students will read through an example story. The group will consider the strengths and weaknesses of the example story and then think about the things that they might change about it to improve it. If there is time, we may practice writing for this question as well. Session 4 This final session gives students the opportunity to review the sample questions we have examined so far, including a new one, before selecting an image to plan for themselves. After planning individually, students will practice writing their responses under timed conditions. Constructive feedback on the work will be given if students would like this.
